Viewpoint over the residential areas and beaches of Koh Samui

Which name is the map really using

My first month here I rented "in Chaweng" and told people so, while our paperwork said Bo Phut. Koh Samui has seven administrative subdistricts called tambon; most famous beach names are villages inside them. Chaweng and Bang Rak sit inside Bo Phut tambon, Lamai inside Maret. When an inventory counts 959 homes in Bo Phut and 96 in Chaweng, those are two granularities of overlapping ground, not neighbouring districts, so read area numbers with that nesting in mind.

Bo Phut for village life with everything open

What do you want from a first year on the island? If the answer mixes dining, walkability and a family pace, Bo Phut keeps winning my recommendation. Fisherman's Village anchors the weekend market crowd, the beaches suit small children at calm hours, and the inventory runs deep: 959 recorded homes, more than any other area, which means real choice in every price band. We nearly settled here before Maenam won us on quieter roads.

Maenam for families who want space

Our own three-bedroom house with its mango tree sits in Maenam, chosen after two years of renting further south. The village stretches along a long quiet beach where the water stays swimmable half the year, international groceries and bakeries cover the weekly run, and 338 recorded rentals give families room to negotiate. Retirees and work-from-home parents fill the neighbourhood; anyone needing nightlife drives up the coast, which is precisely why the nights stay silent.

Chaweng for convenience and long evenings

Chaweng carries the island's busiest strip: hospitals, international schools, gyms, restaurants and the beach road humming until late. Recorded as 96 homes, it under-represents reality because so much stock files under parent tambon Bo Phut, a nesting quirk explained above. Singles and couples who want everything within walking distance choose it; families wanting early nights usually do not. I send new arrivals without children here first, purely for how easy the first months feel.

Lamai for value south of the crowds

Lamai was where I almost signed in 2018, drawn by rents that undercut Chaweng for similar beach access. Its 127 recorded listings lean toward condos and smaller homes, which suits single renters, couples and remote workers watching monthly outgoings. The town has grown a proper long-stay scene: gyms, co-working cafes and a night market that locals actually attend. Being a village inside Maret tambon, its count also understates the wider choice across Maret's 188.

Maret's coastline beyond the Lamai strip

Maret itself confuses newcomers because its 188 recorded homes spread across several beaches most visitors cannot place. South of Lamai the coast turns residential again, with hillside pools and gated lanes favoured by families upgrading from apartments. Hua Thanon keeps its fishing-village working rhythm nearby. If your picture of island life involves a villa behind a gate rather than a street with foot traffic, this tambon quietly holds the widest stretch of exactly that.

Choeng Mon and Taling Ngam for quiet ends

The island's corners suit particular lives. Choeng Mon, tucked northeast near Big Buddha with 23 recorded homes, draws retirees and couples who want boutique calm close to the airport side. Taling Ngam wraps the sunset side with 55, where villa living stretches along hills above the five-island view and everyone owns a car out of necessity. Neither suits someone chasing walkable dinner options; both repay the drive with the quietest nights you can buy.

Lipa Noi and the ferryman's coast

Lipa Noi closes the northern west coast with 27 recorded rentals and the island's main car ferry landing at its edge. Settlers here tend to be boat owners, mainland commuters who value the crossing, and households who want Nathon's offices close without living in a town. After eight years of watching friends choose, my rule holds: pick two areas by the life they match, then let inventory depth argue about streets. Lipa Noi argues quietly.
